The meadow grass is turning brown: Self Portraits
The message is clear: women should look a certain way in order to be valued. Svelte, contoured and blow-dried. It is difficult to overcome these pressures, and I never met the ideal, so I would avoid glances in the mirror. And after menopause? Women like me become invisible, particularly when we are unadorned in stylish clothes or make-up.
To counter this I began to make daily self-portraits in 2018. I view myself with curiosity, and have examined the expressions and the emotions that are revealed through the lens. I present myself in the same position, which has allowed me to dispassionately observe the subtle changes in my face each day. It has led me to self-acceptance, I finally feel seen.
